Cutting Your Losses Sooner Rather Than Later

By arbutuscoaching | September 23, 2009

The oracle from Omaha (Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway) said, “Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks.”

I don’t know about you, but when the wealthiest man in the world gives advice, I’m all ears. Buffet’s advice as usual is sound AND goes against human nature. Think of those Nortel shares that you owned, that you hung onto tenaciously, hoping beyond reason that they would go up again, only to have the company declare bankruptcy this January?

It’s human nature to hang onto our investments, whether they are emotional (a person), financial (a stock) or physical (a house that houses wonderful family memories but with the kids gone is now too big.) It’s interesting, but the lengthier our investment in something, the harder it is to give it up or let it go. I’ve seen this in countless bad relationships and in businesses as well.

One of the most impressive things I witnessed recently was when an Internet marketer was honest about why she was withdrawing a course offering – not enough interest. She’s a Southern gal and when I emailed her to tell her how impressed I was with her transparency, she said with a laugh, “As my Daddy taught me, it’s time to cut your losses when you realize that dog don’t hunt.”

So what about you, which of your dogs don’t hunt? As painful as it is to cut your losses now, it will only get harder over time. So if you know you should end something, take a deep breath, envision the future you want and go shopping for a new puppy. Cause there’s lots of dogs out there that hunt.
