How to overcome your fears and achieve success
By arbutuscoaching | September 25, 2009
If there’s one thing I see as a theme that stops people from achieving the success that they want, it’s overcoming their fear. I spoke with a coaching client yesterday who was afraid to approach an organization that had made a mistake that was costing her a substantial amount of money regarding a program she was offering. She was torn between wanting to have a good relationship with them, because she wanted to joint venture with them again and also wanting to express her needs about her bottom line. At the end of our coaching session, she realized that her resentment about their mistake made talking to them her only recourse. Because everything is energy, she realized that if she didn’t, her workshop probably wouldn’t fill up and those attending would pick up the bad vibe.
Courage, which is all about overcoming fear, is a muscle that gets stronger the more we use it. As bionic as he is, Lance Armstrong’s first bike ride was probably on trainer wheels and the chances are good that he fell down the first few times out. But here’s the secret: he got up on his bike, again and again and again, exercising his courage muscle and ended up winning the Tour de France seven times.
Confidence is the ability to keep moving even though you’re afraid of what you’re moving past. As a business client of mine said a while ago,” When I look back at what I was afraid of 6 years ago, I can’t even believe that it was scary – I’m up to much more frightening things now! I just know that the fear is part of the journey. I acknowledge it and keep moving.”
Where do you want to play a bigger game? To start, exercise your courage muscles. Or as Susan Jeffers, author and therapist says in the title of her best selling book, “Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway.”
